Bunch of cool actors in intense and attractively simple black ops operatives thriller.

Haywire, Gina Carano, Steven Soderbergh

This was an interesting experiment. Probably the first time I went to see a movie without knowing anything at all about it. Not even the meaning of the title (which by one of definitions means mentally irregular and fits quite right for the movie), just the name of director and some actors. It turned out to be a great surprise.

Steven Soderbergh has a unique ability to attract lots of stars in one movie and choreograph them in intriguing manner. Maybe he had overdone it a bit with Ocean 11 series, but he managed to make a recent movie about a flu epidemic (Contagion) thrilling, so the idea of him doing black ops movie with such a great team of actors seemed bullet-proof.

The first thing to check after watching – who was responsible for fights. These sections are really impressive, brutal and natural. It seems they were filmed continuously, without stopping motion as in traditional martial arts films, something in the vein of Book of Eli or Bourne movies, which one of the fight choreographers was working previously. Two main guys, responsible for fights, earlier worked with such movies as The Expendables, Ninja Assassin, The Tournament, among others. And this experience is really put to good use here.

The main girl for the job, Gina Carano, fits well, although I can‘t really imagine her in some other role. It‘s her first high profile movie and she will probably appear in some kind of similar roles in the nearest future. The story is really simple: she is a private black ops agent, who is double-crossed by her boss and trying to avenge everyone involved. That‘s it, no saving of countries or playing heroes, just personal motivation to kill. I loved that everyone in this movie is driven just by personal greed. It gives kind of sincere feeling and the actors:  Douglas, Banderas, Fassbender and especially McGregor are really convincing.

Loved the film, really. Perfect soundtrack, long shots. Even the short car chase episode is different than usual. Good ad for Evo X.
